Solar water pumping has transformed farming in many parts of Kenya by removing the cost and hassle of diesel. Here is what you need to know.
How it works
Solar panels power a pump controller, which drives a submersible (borehole) or surface pump. Water is pumped while the sun shines and stored in a tank, so it is available around the clock.
Key sizing questions
- Daily water demand — litres per day for crops, livestock or domestic use.
- Total dynamic head — the vertical lift plus pipe friction losses.
- Source yield — how much water the borehole or river can safely supply.
Storage is your battery
Rather than storing electricity in expensive batteries, most solar pumping systems store water in an elevated tank. This is simpler and far more cost-effective.
Replacing a diesel pump
Many farms recover their investment through fuel savings alone. We assess existing pumps and pipework to decide whether to replace, retrofit or run a hybrid setup.
